Stock Week in Weekly Review Monday to Friday, Happy New Year 2017

The week through Dec 26 to 30 witnessed the markets rallying sharply from a low of 7,893. The Nifty gained 2.51 percent Week of Week to close at 8,186, by which it sustained the loses of the previous week.

On 29 December, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that for the period between April 1 and December 19, direct tax collections raised at a net rate of 13.6 percent year-on-year. He said all the data available, including that of indirect taxes and Rabi crop sowing, indicated that the circumstances was better than what the critics of demonetization feared...... Read More

Is this a bad spread bet?

Most things I’v read online say spread betting isn’t for long term. However in the below situation I’m struggling to see why this isn’t a better way of getting exposure to a company I like.

The company
Market cap ~£70M (listed on AIM)
I believe over 1-3 years it’ll rise significantly
I currently own £20k shares
I don’t believe it’ll drop more than 20%
I’m thinking of upping my exposure significantly and using the £20k as a stop loss instead (say -20%)

Pros
I get more exposure
I am still staking the same money

Cons
If the shares fall below my stop loss (which i don’t think it likely) I’ll lose my position

Im sure I’m missing something and would be great to see what you think?

Is this a bad spread bet?

Fx Trading Software

Hi

I trade full-time with success in stocks, indices and , to a lesser extent, commodities. I am, however, rubbish at Fx. I use both CFD's and Spreadbet.

Does anyone know of any affordable and profitable Fx trading system? I'm quite happy to pay for a good one. I understand some of the USA based systems are good and produce consistent profits - or is this all just wishful thinking?

Thanks

Ticket Bots

So I'm a season ticket holder trying to take advantage of the ticket presales that are given to season ticket holders. Generally everyone is allotted up to 8 tickets for each account. However, due to the high volume, and I'm sure ticket bot programs involved, I was only able to walk away with only a few tickets last year during the presales for opening day and playoffs. Is there a ticket bot program that I can purchase, to assure me of my 8 tickets when the presales go on next year?

Thanks!

Buy and Hold Stocks for the next decade

Buy and hold stocks are definitely underrated. Some investors spend copious amounts of time tracking their investments and hoping their value increase.

Then there are dividend investors. Sure, they like watching the value of their stocks rise, but they also like getting free money every three months—money they can either cash or reinvest.

Dividend investing might not be as exciting as trying to find the latest tech stock that is about to soar, but that’s because dividend investing is a long-term sport for patient investors. Dividends are typically paid out by larger, well-established companies and have become increasingly popular in the current near-record-low interest rate environment.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) sells hundreds of thousands of products. And thrives when times are tough. Each week, nearly 260 million customers visit Wal-Mart’s more than 11,500 stores in 28 countries and e-commerce sites in 11 countries.
In fiscal 2016, Walmart returned $10.4 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. The company pays an annual dividend of 2.88%, or $2.00 per share. Moreover, Wal-Mart is an excellent dividend growth stock, which makes it one of the best stocks for long-term growth.

Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) is a global powerhouse that designs, manufactures, sells, and services diesel and alternate fuel engines. The company is a high-quality dividend stock for long-term investors because it maintains a dominant market share position and has a massive dealer network with more than 7,200 locations in more than 190 countries and territories.
In 2015, the company earned $1.4 billion on revenue of $19.1 billion. Cummins currently pays an annual dividend of 3.14%, or $4.10 per share, and has raised its annual dividend yield for the last 11 consecutive years. This definitely makes Cummins a buy-and-hold stock name.

In need of some Insights

Hello All,

I'm working on transitioning from Equity Options strategies to Futures Options strategies.

I have done my homework and understand the risk management, etc.

There are a few things that I plan on doing here that is worth noting, and i'd like some insight.

Liquidity, data sources, research, etc. These are just some of the things that i'm looking for that can provide me insights to my trading.

I know CME and CBOT have calendars out there, and understand there are data streams out there that I don't have access to.

I currently use ThinkorSwim platform and am thinking of transitioning to Interactive Brokers and buying their data.

Any subscriptions, data plans, E-magazines, etc you all could advise me on?

My strategies for starting out:

(>90%) OTM
(30-55 DTE)
Short Strangle, Credit Spread, and DITM Debit Spreads

I am starting this with the the most liquid and the also some of the medium volume traded.

I know this post is all over the place, but I just have a lot of questions and I hope to have some insight on some of these topics.

Thnx

UK basket trades

I have an algorithm which requires to trade basket of stocks (20-30) at close of day in UK stock market. I have been comparing the UK stock trades costs. They are much more expansive than US. For example IB is charging 6GBP per stock, which will wipe out my profits.
Is there a UK brokerage which will allow basket trades lower commission

To get around this problem I have a cunning plan.
Have an agreement with the other person to both buy the present they would like and thank the other person for the pressy one really wanted. If you see what I mean.
That way you get and gave exactly what you wanted.
Brilliant or what ?

Daily Stock Market Performance Calendar

I collected over 20 years of stock market price data and created a 5 year weighted average return for each trading day of the year. The last 5 years are weighted 3 times the 20 year average. This will not only show bullish and bearish days, but which ones are big and which ones are small. I have created a free webpage that posts the results of this study via a weekly calendar. The results of this calendar is computed from historical data. Please keep in mind that historical data is not always good for making decisions; you need to use your own judgement and other data, too. I hope everyone finds this topic interesting. Please post if you agree the calendar for any given day and why or why not. All we are interested is from a day trader's point of view should we go long or short for a given day. Free data available?

Hi, I'm like so many others trying to invent the method that gives a big enough plus, using fixed rules. I have such a method that on one FX gives a considerable amount of points, based on the historic data. I want to test that method on a lot of other FXs and Indices and Commodities to see which react best to this method. But currently getting the data to test on in excel is very cumbersome and I get data where numbers are sometimes formatted as text etc. Takes forever.

So, where can I (free?) get historic data? I need approx the last 15 days with 1 minute intervals.

Thanks

Can I sell right before the ex-dividend date then buy back for UK Reit?

UK Reit charges 20% tax for dividend, can I sell it before the dividend date then buy it back to avoid it? Or it charges for everyone then sends to their accounts so I don't even need to do that?

By the way I am not an UK resident and try to invest in UK Reit as a foreigner through local IB brokerage. What other tax or fee I need to consider?

Time to go long volatility (VIX)

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the good forum.

I normally only trade Brent (even got a blog haha) and you can see me in the commodity forum. But I can't overlook a nice opportunity so I decided to write a little about it.

I open this thread to discuss it with you: being long volatility. Medium-term horizon: few weeks. With the contango this kind a trade is kind of a "timing the market trade".

Here are the reasons why I think this could be huge:

Currently the VIX is at around 11-12 and has been moving between 12 and 28 for the past year. My view is at least a quick double in value in the next 1-3 months.

My idea is that we are near historical low. A VIX around 12 is not common at all and this level act as a resistance.

And there are a lot of potential catalysts for a surge in volatility:
-Fed Hike
-Trump in January

--> potential correction on stocks (currently at historical high)

I wrote an article on this matter which is way more detailed if you are interested :

http://ift.tt/2hIq1nV

Will keep you updated on the results.

Axitrader,PFD nz,Global Prime, IC Markets, Darwinex, FXPIG, Tickmill, DirectFX?

Getting back into trading again & I am trying find a reputable regulated broker with low spreads(for scalping & long term trades) & minimal slippage. Would any of you traders be able to recommend any from the above mentioned please or any other decent one out there that is not a bucketshop?

I am aware that most brokers are merely wolves in sheep clothing.. I have gone to look at reviews on most brokers and they all seem to have reviews that make me want to avoid trading completely.

Well, here is hoping I can get some good advice or recommendation from some of you on this forum. :)

I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

How I trade crude oil

I guys, this is some though about a general oil trading approach. Would be glad to exchange with you

The goal of this post is to tackle different aspects I find important in oil investing. What trader or investor should know and where to look at. But each point in there could be way more developed and should be used in a proper context.

Chart on http://ift.tt/2hWMAD2

(1) A multi-factor approach
(2) Observations about oil
(3) Oil Investing basic approach

(1) Multi-factor approach

Oil is wonderful for the generalist trader. Depending on your investment horizon, you have to weight different elements and signals before taking a decision, as for me it generally goes this way:

Short-term: importance of chart analysis / technicals
On the short-term oil is a very volatile asset. But there are strong and “respected” indicators that can sometimes help. I often use technical analysis in a ranging market or “slow” day, without any important news or data release.

What I use the most: support & resistance, Bollinger bands, RSI

Ex in this trade, indicators where showing overbought conditions, and it turned out to be profitable: 13.12.2016 – OPEC Deal fallouts: Short Trading Opportunity

Medium-term main risk: geopolitics
Major risk when trading on a week or month horizon is that unexpected event happens in the world.

I.e: war in Middle East, riots in Saoudi Arabia, sabotage in Nigeria, Trump tweets

On the long-term fundamentals tend to keep things balance and if there are no huge change in amount of supply/demand linked to the peculiar event the price action has time to mean-revert.

On the short-term the risk is lower (day trading, scalping). But always there

Long-term trend: Fundamentals
Commodities investing is all about demand and supply on the long-term. Why did we recently experienced a 70% drop? US Shale oil disrupted the fragile balance in the oil market.

The importance of the US Dollar
Oil is traded in dollar. As a result, it is inversely correlated to this currency.

This inverse correlation is especially clear when there is a long-term trend. In 2003 – 2008 the dollar was in a sustained bear trend while crude oil witnessed one of its strongest bull runs. Then the trend changed direction at the same moment during the financial crisis: rally in dollar and fall in oil.

Yet on the short and medium term this correlation may not always hold. The context and/or other news may drive oil prices regardless of the direction of the dollar.

(2) Observations about oil

Seasonality (US)
Spring: usually lower demand. Indeed refineries schedule their repairs during this period, roughly 25% close

In May the maintenance season ends -> refinery oil process increases -> stock level decreases -> price increases

Decay in Producer Data / Production Data

In the US for instance, we have been assisting to a fall in oil rigs in 2015 , yet the production began to fall in the second semester of the year. There is a latency period to take into account

Oil loves Great Movements
Oil has been historically prone to impressive upside/downside move

For instance, over the past 30 years (except for current), oil has experienced 6 big lows, and all were in V-shape (see graph above).

(3) Oil Investing basic approach

Technicals on the short-term
Look for: trading range, support and resistance on the short-term

Consider fundamentals on the long-term
On the long-term Even if you identify a strong technical signal, a fundamental signal will have the upper-hand.

When to expect volatility: fundamental data such as production, rig counts or inventories data
Volume usually increase a lot around those release. Hard to trade and can break a trend.

Usually main drivers of the prices.

Sentiment: Commitment of Traders report
To see open interest in oil futures. Good indication of market sentiment.

Sometimes really useful when adopting a contrarian approach.

Geopolitics: the x factor
OPEC meetings, Russia, Iran sanction-related meeting, Trump declarations…

How I trade crude oil

easylanguage stop-limit order

Hi,
i'm trying to code a Stop-Limit order with easylanguage for Tradestation.
Unfortunately (!) TS don not provide a built -in stop-limit order to insert in strategies so as reported by tech support (!) one need to "mimic" the order and coding a "synth stop-limit" with Intrabar Order Generation (IOG)

I've tryied but IOG seems to overcomplicate simple task so maybe someone can help me to solve the issue...

below the code provided by the support

Code:

[intrabarordergeneration = true]
inputs:
LimitOffsetTicks( 5 ),
BarsToSetRange( 5 ) ;
variables:
OpenRange( false ),
OpenRangeHigh( 0 ),
OpenRangeLow( 0 ),
LongStopPrice( 0 ),
ShortStopPrice( 0 ),
Count( 0 ),
intrabarpersist EnterLong( false ),
intrabarpersist EnterShort( false ),
intrabarpersist EnteredToday( false ),
ATick( MinMove / PriceScale ),
MP( 0 ) ;

MP = MarketPosition ;

if MP <> 0 then
begin
EnteredToday = true ;
EnterLong = false ;
EnterShort = false ;
end ;

if Date <> Date[1] then
begin
OpenRangeHigh = High ;
OpenRangeLow = Low ;
Count = 1 ;
EnteredToday = false ;
end
else if Count < BarsToSetRange then
begin
OpenRangeHigh = MaxList( High, OpenRangeHigh ) ;
OpenRangeLow = MinList( Low, OpenRangeLow ) ;
Count += 1 ;
end
else if EnteredToday = false then
begin
if Close crosses above OpenRangeHigh + ATick then
begin
EnterLong = true ;
EnterShort = false ;
end
else if Close crosses below OpenRangeLow - ATick then
begin
EnterShort = true ;
EnterLong = false ;
end ;
end ;

if EnterLong then
begin
Buy next bar at OpenRangeHigh + ATick + LimitOffsetTicks * ATick Limit ;
end ;

if EnterShort then
begin
SellShort next bar at OpenRangeLow - ATick - LimitOffsetTicks * ATick Limit ;
end ;

if BarsSinceEntry = 5 then
begin
Sell next bar at Market ;
Buy to Cover next bar at Market ;
end ;

IBB = 1 tik
The code should trade the break of the range of the first candle of the day, regardless the timeframes - because Tradestation don't allow stop-limit orders in it's code (there not a built-in for stop-limit), and because the slippages are very very large (on MSFT i can have a 20 cents slippage for a stop order!), I was trying to "mimic" a stop-limit...to protect me from the exorbitant slippage provided....

(maybe easylanguage ond IOG are not the best to code something like that...maybe better drop Tradestation and go with a C# or C++ based coding language?)

easylanguage stop-limit order

Newbie & my first question

Hello There, I am new to this website and also to active investing. I have been dabbling with stocks for few years and have developed keen interest on it. I have a basic question. From my fundamental analysis I see that some stocks have good EPS but have poor share price movement. They don't see any movement for days, to be specific I am looking at stocks like Ideagen, Treatt PLC, ECO Animal health group. Is there a specific reason why shares don't see any change in price for days and if they move it is a modest change inspite of having some good financial results?

Any thoughts much appreciated

Transferring a file from PC to Android

I have some meditation recordings on my laptop that I wanted to move to my cell phone- Android

I tried to download an app called ES and it shows I downloaded it on Google Play but it doesn't show up on my app list.

Then I moved all the recordings to windows player and put them in the library.

I had a USB cable running from my laptop to my smartphone and I copied them to my phone. I know they are in the phone because my total memory consumed went up about 1.25 GB.

But I can't find the things anywhere on my phone......they are not found under APPS, Documents, Sheets and Downloads.

Anywhere and everywhere I could possible think it could be. I thought that it would have been found in Documents or the APP list.

Where can I find it?

Thanks

Trading the ASX

Hi all,

I hold a keen interest in continuing to trade the Australia markets, particularly the Lithium/Graphite minerals companies, some of whom I already hold stocks in.

Now I trade with TD Direct Investing but am looking for some advice. I am based in the UK, and TD are limited with regards to the ASX.

Im looking for the best online broker to buy stocks and shares really, also if anyone knows one that allows options too that would be great.

For example, TD only allows one day limits to be placed etc for buys/sells, not really ideal..

Ive tried to get a commsec account but being the UK has made this hard, does anyone have any help, advice or opinions on the best one to use?

Thanks

Unique Forex Price Action Trading - Institutional Levels

Hello Traders

I will be using this thread to journal trades that I take utilizing institutional levels. When I say "institutions" I am referring to large multi-national banks, hedge funds, and the firms that collectively account for the large majority of the daily trading volume in the Forex market. I am referring to the firms that control the markets.

This trading will be based solely on price action and how it reacts with the institutional levels.

To put things simply, I will be trading "support" & "resistance". However it is important to understand that the concept of support and resistance goes much deeper than most realize. Price is supported at certain levels because institutional traders have orders at such levels and if enough collective buying power comes in at the level it drives price up. Similarly, price finds resistance at certain levels because institutional traders have orders at such levels and if enough collective selling power comes in at the level it drives price down.

Support and resistance from a retail perspective may not offer a great advantage and that is because it open to the interpretation of the trader. If you put 10 traders in a room and show them the same chart and you asked them to pick the main support and resistance levels, odds are they would all have very different levels.

However if you know the very levels that institutional traders are watching than it is no longer up to interpretation, it is black and white. That is the basis of the strategy and the results will be shown below.

Enjoy.

Is stop loss hunting avoidance worth it?

Hi,

I've read some articles that say that one of the ways to avoid having your stops taken out by stop hunters is to widen your stops, thereby keeping them away from where hunters would expect the large pool of stop losses to be. For example, on a reversal trade, since hunters expect the pool of stops to be within, say, 10 pips of support or resistance, set your stop 15 pips away.

The issue: On the one hand, by widening your stop, it might be missed by the hunters more often than otherwise and you'll stay in more trades instead of losing your stop loss cash value each time. On the other, each time you widen your stop you're reducing your pip value; so if you win the trade, you'll end up with less profit.

Question: Which would be better in the long run, to place stops in the expected place and get stopped out by hunters more often while earning more on the trades you win, or to widen your stops, thereby keeping you in more trades, but earning less on each of those trades?

Thank you,
Norm

First Job In Trading Advice

Hi all,

I have recently accepted a job based in London to start as a junior Market Maker within the AIM, I will be working very closely with a team of MMs and learning on the job, I can't find much specific content on the topic to read online or in books. I understand the basic premise of the role, general terminology, AIM and the world of trading but have never used real capital to do so. If anyone has any ideas on good books/resources or any advice before I start it would be greatly appreciated.

Look forward to any responses,
Cheers.

10 Most Profitable Trading Strategies

There is one simple mistake that a lot of traders are doing. They buy or short stocks that they believe will go in their direction. Unfortunately, in many cases they lose money and get out of business very quickly. Believing alone won’t help you to succeed in this industry. You need to understand the stock in order to trade it. You need to automate each your decision of whether to buy the stock or not and to know when to exit it.

Before we dive deep into the strategies or as we call in formations in this article, we need to understand why the stocks are moving into either direction and how to be on the right side of the trade. First of all, we need to understand supply and demand.

In many cases, where there is an oversupply of short sellers or long buyers – imbalance occurs. If it happens, you should expect a big move that will start happening after oversupply will decrease and the other side will start to prevail. The formations that are shown below show us how this is happening and explain how to trade such a move. If you start to automate your trading strategy by using following formations, the blind trading will disappear and you will be armed with the needed tools to have a successful trading career.

We recommend that you take a closer look at them and share it with your friends in the trading community to help them understand the principle that we described above and improve their trading performance. With all that said, let’s get started.

Formations for Short

1) Short on a parabolic move

One of the best formations with the very great percentage of risk-reward. If you see that the stock continues to rise in value without any significant decrease in price, you might want to start opening a short position. When the wash occurs, and in most cases it does, then don’t forget to close parts of your position with each meaningful decrease.

2) Shorting lower-high

When you see that each high price is lower that the previous high price, then it means that the stock will probably continue to fall.

Click the image to open in full size.

3) Short the Gap

If the company issued some important news about its business, its stock will probably go one away or another on the afterhours or premarket. If you understand the news and think that the market understanding of those news is wrong and the gap that was created during non-market hours is meaningless, then you should think of opening a short position and risk management it carefully.

Click the image to open in full size.

4) Shorting the fake figure

In a lot of cases, when the stock breaks whole numbers or prices like 5.50, 5.80 etc. and cannot go above, it means that the fall of that stock is about to begin.

Click the image to open in full size.

5) Afternoon fade

Sometimes the stock might be not very volatile at the open and can continue to trade passively for the first half of the day. However, in the second half of the day, activity might come by and the stock will begin to wash away. So don’t forget that the second part of the day is as important as the first one.

Click the image to open in full size.

6) Green to red

In this case, the buyers of the stock failed to push it higher and that stock reversed and started to fall apart for the rest of the day.

Click the image to open in full size.

7) Short the Gap

If the company issued some important news about its business, its stock will probably go one away or another on the afterhours or premarket. If you understand the news and think that the market understanding of those news is wrong and the gap that was created during non-market hours is meaningless, then you should think of opening a short position and risk management it carefully.

Click the image to open in full size.

8) Triangle or ABCD

Triangle is the most standard formation for going long. When a lot of buyers are keep purchasing the stock, then in one moment it will go up momentarily and wipe out the short sellers that were betting against such a move.

Click the image to open in full size.

9) Higher-low

It’s a reversed Lower-high. If each lower price if higher than the previous one, the the stock will probably continue to grow until it breaks such a pattern.

Click the image to open in full size.

10) Breakout

Breakout occurs when the gap between buyers and sellers narrows and one side prevails the other. In our case, buyers outsmarted sellers.

Career/job as FX technical analyst/chartist

Hi guys,

Would appreciate some advice from you guys regarding a job as a technical analyst/chartist.

I was previously from a prop firm but I left because I felt I could trade on my own albeit with a smaller amount of capital and less time required compared to day trading.

Do you guys have any inkling of an idea what's the career progression as a technical chartist/analyst?

The firm is a finance research house so they research a ton of markets and sell these info. firms i.e. banks/hedge funds/institutions/prop firms.

Architecture – another artform

Wikipedia
"Architecture (Latin architectura, from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων arkhitekton "architect", from ἀρχι- "chief" and τέκτων "builder") is both the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings and other physical structures. Architectural works, in the material form of buildings, are often perceived as cultural symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements."

Architecture affects us every day – you can't walk down the street without seeing it and if you've got loads of trading dosh you don't have to spend it just on a yacht: a nice house won't make you seasick. This place is pretty impressive (but it's not on RightMove and you need to be a member of the spirit world).

A thought: recent architectural destruction in the Middle East just adds to the appalling humanitarian atrocities. :(

Institutional Trading

Welcome Traders

My name is Matt. I am a partner and trader at Unique Forex. Our trading is based on institutional research and our proprietary trading strategies.

I am starting this thread to educate on the masses. When I use the word "institutions", I am referring to large multinational banks, hedge funds, and other firms that collectively account for the majority of the daily trading volume in the Forex market.

Upwards of 90% of all retail traders fail. There are many reasons for that, but at the end of the day that means that 90% of institutions are making money. Ultimately, the reason why most retail traders fail is because they are not on the same playing field as the institutions.

Institutions employ teams of analysts who have a sole purpose of ensuring the profitability of the firm. These institutions have access to information that retail traders simply don't have access to, so how can they compete? Well the answer to that question is simple, they can't, and that is why 90% of them fail.

I will be posting institutional trading setups here on 8 currency pairs:
  • AUD/JPY
  • AUD/USD
  • EUR/JPY
  • EUR/USD
  • GBP/USD
  • NZD/USD
  • USD/CAD
  • USD/JPY

I will be active in posting these trading setups and in my responses. I look forward to the feedback and to some great discussions!

Automated Trading Set Daily

Hello,

I am looking for a program to automate trades I specify each morning for the entire day. Also, specifically to automate buys and sells of the same contract multiple times for the day.

I use Interactive Brokers and it won't allow me to send a sell order when it is already holding a buy order, and vice versa.

The order types would be relative orders and either ETF options or ForEx.

Can anyone recommend software or a programmer?

Thanks!

What is a sensible level of risk???

Hey guys

I am new to trading and am at the moment doing some studies before jumping in. I am familiar with the concept of trading with a risk reward ratio but am unsure as to which level i should set my risk. I will be starting off with swing trading. I will be using a leveraged account with a 5% margin and plan on being a pretty conservative trader. I am trying to come up with a trading plan and was thinking that my risk or R would be set at the 5% of the stock value. eg. if it was a $100 stock my stop would be set no lower than $95, which if i stopped out would be kind of like losing my own money (if i avoid slippage). is this a sensible strategy and should i look ONLY for oppurtunities where this is possible or is this a bogus concept???

i have watched some training videos but they did not mention this.

Still trying with FTS Charting

Hi All,

I very nearly bought the Nick Kruger course but after reading the thread I think I avoided a narrow miss. Though, for the money, it seemed a decent punt.

Anyhow, I'm still ploughing through my FTS charting course and am currently long on the GBP. Gutted I didn't think to sell GBP a few days before Brexit result. If we'd remained, the uptick I'm sure would not have been to high and a good stop loss would have taken me out if too scary, but seeing what happened was a killer.

And that after not backing Corbyn to win! He was at one stage 500 - 1 against. Ah well, onto the next.

I also used to have the FTS option trading course by Peter Hall but lost it in one of my moves and wondered if there was anyone who knows how to get hold of it again?

Kindest

Ivan

How much money do I NEED to start?

Hello all. I'm new to trading but I'm very interested and want to learn and find out if it's something I could be good at. I'm wondering if it would even be worth trying to start day trading with only $200 (with $4.95 commission on each trade). If I had to guess, honestly, I'd guess that it would be next to impossible to make a profit with such a small investment. Should I even try with this amount of money or, if not, how much should I have in my account before I start trading?

Afterwards I thought I should say "thank you" in writing (rather than just think about in my head!) for all the work they do in keeping this forum going over so many years . Am sure that many other forum users are able to echo those comments!

So thanks a bunch to Sharky, Timsk and Trader333!! Thanks so much for all your hard work over the years :clap::clap:

Futures question

Hi,

I currently have a short position in ES Mini December 16 that is down. What happens at the expiration date with these? Do I need to liquidate them beforehand? One source said they roll over to the next futures contract, is that something that happens automatically or I'd have to buy these then short the March futures? Thanks for your answers.

Does this trailing stop exist ??????

Hey everybody new this forum and I have searched but I cannot find the answer. I do not know if this is something that I am just describing wrong so I'll see if anyone can help me

I'm wondering if any of the software's or trading platforms allow for a diminishing trailing stop, what I mean by this is the trailing stop would shrink after you get the certain levels you're looking for. let's just say originally I set it to a 2% stop loss, when it goes up to a 1% gain it shrinks my trailing stop down to half a percent to lock in all profit but still give myself a chance for a running stock.

I've been daytrading for a few months now and doing very well. But I have missed a couple run away breakouts by using OCO trades and taking my happy profit, while leaving the game early while the stock ran another 2-4%. I've searched for this but can't seem to find the answer so if anyone know of this feature on any of the trading platforms please point me in the correct direction.

Thanks for reading and any help anyone might have. Stay green my friends!

Major Double Top From 2008 Tagged On Steel Dynamics, Inc. ($STLD)

Shares of Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ:STLD) are getting tired from their epic run. In the last month the stock is up 75%. Investors are curious at what level Steel Dynamics will pull back? The answer lies in the year 2008. Back in 2007 and 2008 there was no fear that a financial collapse was about to take place. Instead, investors thought the economy would just keep improving forever. Weirdly enough, it almost sounds like how things are today. President-Elect Donald Trump is supposed to make miracles happen with the economy right? Another creepy similarity happens to be with the price of Steel Dynamics, Inc. just before the financial collapse. The price hit a high of $40.75 before the collapse began. Today, Steel Dynamics is inching toward that same level, less than a Dollar away. Considering the scary similarities and knowing that the double top will be major resistance, I am going to short the stock heavily for at least a pull back. Technical analysis of the currency pair EUR/USD on 06/12/2016. The daily chart

General analysis.
At yesterday's trading session the currency pair EUR / USD was able to go beyond the range of the frame in which it was moving from the middle of November 2016 by breaking its upper boundary. The price has tested resistance level 1.0800.

Considering local increases of the prices if the ECB at its meeting confirms the continuation of the course on the super soft monetary policy.

Stochastic indicator shows us a clear Buy but the signal line is already included in the overbought zone.

Next few days

After a sharp ups and downs on Monday the pair may correct down to 1.0650.
We expect a rebound from the resistance of 1.0800 with the further back to 1.0650.

Long opening must be confirmed by receiving of the receipt of the rebound from the resistance level.

For the first position, it is necessary use no more than 1-2% of the deposit.

The range of possible movement down about 150 points, so traders will be able to open additional positions for sale.

Im hoping someone can answer a quick question on margin calls. Im aware that a margin account is needed to short shares, but when I enter an order it gives me an option to choose between cash and margin. Can I still receive a margin call using cash in my margin account? For example if I have 100% of my cash in a short position and the stock more than doubles what happens?

Art is big big money and therefore should interest any of you guys.
Not only do pictures by famous artists tend to appreciate in value, they also go in and out of fashion. Their value is determined in the general market by auction and on appraisal by experts. There is of course only a limited number of pictures that any one artist can paint, which raises their worth especially when the artist dies.
This picture by Claude Monet is worth millions of £s

FCA concerns on Spreadbetting

Today's news is that the FCA are not happy that so many particularly inexperienced retail punters are losing money on spreadbetting and CFD's.

They are asking for leverage limits particularly for inexperienced clients, no more opening bonuses, and greater emphasis on the risks involved.

As an experienced spreadbetter I trust none of the changes being proposed will have any affect on those of us who are like myself. However, I do also feel, given what the FCA are saying, that there should be greater restrictions on new accounts - especially where persons have no experience trading any margined instruments (including spreadbets). It is too easy, after all, for someone with no experience to 'blow their load' again and again, and to keep the FCA content (at least) surely more needs to be done.

Perhaps spreadbet companies should think of offering a limited risk account, with substantially reduced leverage, for *all* new account openers - *unless* they can prove prior experience with any margined products. Until now, as long as one accepted a disclaimer a newcomer can have the same exposure as any experienced client, and we all know what happens to most newcomers when that happens...

It might well be better for everyone that inexperienced clients should have their trading exposure restricted until they have garnered enough experience, which could e.g., at least be for the first six months to a year. Then and only then will they be able to join the rest of us - again on full understanding and acceptance of the risks involved.

Or does anyone have a better suggestion? Restricting newcomers to demo accounts only, just wouldn't be realistic. But it's clear that the FCA are demanding that something has to be done, to protect the most vulnerable, when a quoted 82% of retail clients lose money.

PS The fact that so many fund managers lose money too, is (..ahem) of course, another day's work altogether...

Changes to CFD leverage

I for one think the new changes proposed for CFD trading is a great move and a bit late for some but it should keep traders in the game longer and force them to learn more about trading instead of gambling.

Entering the market

Hi Guys,
So i'm using a Trading 212 demo account at the moment and seem to find that every time I want to buy into the market, whatever it may be, my buy in price is always much higher than the actual price at the time. Same for selling.
Now i understand these guys have to make money but is this spread so large because they aren't a very good broker or are they all like this.
To give you an example, right now im looking at EUR/USD on the 5 minute time frame. The current market price is 1.07795 and for me to buy in they are offering me 1.07804 so im at an instant disadvantage. It makes it quite difficult to set SL and TP also. Can anyone shed any light on this and is this the industry standard.
Thank you in advance, hope its not a silly question.
Regards.

Liquidity during Asian session for EU/GU

Hi all,

Looking for some insight from some of you on here who may know more about the Asian session than I do!

Currently, being from the UK, I trade during what has been established to be the "best times to trade" i.e. during London/NY. Things are going ok at the moment although I have been considering the Asian session; I have read people say that it is a more predictable time to trade, good for range trading etc. I wouldn't know much about its dynamic as I am usually asleep, although I am interested in liquidity restrictions during this time.

Is it possible to trade EU and GU during those hours with much volume or would you be limited by liquidity? Anyone have any experience of placing decent sized trades at those times of the night?

Cheers
AC

Stocks to look forward in Dec 2016

1) A few years ago, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) stock was making headlines because of the triple-digit capital gains it managed to provide to its investors. Now, the company is very different. It has become much more established in its business and is able to reward Apple stock investors with dividends.

2) Walmart stock is known for its ability to provide recession-proof income. Despite all the economic cycles in the past four decades, the company never stopped increasing its payout to dividend investors.

3) Speaking of holiday shopping, don’t forget to put Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) stock on your watch list.

Post Your Rules

I'm interested to hear your trading/risk managemnt rules. I'll start with a few of mine over the years:

1. Each new position has to have a defined stop and a target before it is taken
2. Max risk per security is x% of capital (capital excludes open p&l)
3. Maximum number of trades is x per y
4. Don't enter new positions when travelling
5. Don't add to losing positions
6. Don't take home a losing position on a Friday

I'm sure you guys have many more interesting rules to add. Perhaps we'll end up with a comprehensive list by the end?!

Cheers,

Any recommendations on further trading strategy?

Hi all,
i've had a former experience with binary which i did not enjoy so much. let's say i did not lose or gain. however, i felt too insecure to work on multiple platforms, and i only managed to work with one.
that's chapter one.
i let it rest for a while as i was getting too busy at work, and recently i've started a new account with a different broker which is performing a bit better for me now. however, i want to go in deeper into manual binary trading.

i need any recommendations on how to, and which brokers? i wish to keep the present broker i'm working with, but gain some confidence with further knowledge, strategies and maybe try some new platforms out.

thanks in advance

Trend following futures with £10k

Hi there,

I've been trading for about 4 years, trend following stocks and holding positions for weeks at a time. Basically I want to move up the risk/ return ladder so I'm considering switching from stocks to futures.

I was doing a bit of research into Andreas Clenow as I was thinking about buying his book on the subject. However on his site, he recommends starting capital of no less than about a million.

What's everyone else's view?

Re: SuperForex - Company News and Analysis

GBP/JPY Technical Outlook

In our recent report about the GBP/NZD we recommended selling the pair around 1.7482 and taking profit around 1.7444, then buying the pair at the target at 1.7566. We saw that we reached our targets in both buy and sell positions to make a profit with +38 from the sell order and +122 from the buy one.

Today we’ll discuss another sterling pair and another great opportunity to make a profit - the GBP/JPY.

We’re following the negative economic data from the UK about the manufacturing PMI but the pair didn’t decline after this news. On the contrary, the pair went up to reach 145 levels.

We can see the pair is trading around SMA 200 on the daily time frame around 144 above 50% fibo in the correction wave and we think its target will be around 61.8%.

If we look at the RSI 4 Indicator we’ll see it still maintains high levels around 82, so we expect that the pair will rise a little bit and decline again, and the MACD indicator supports our positive vision about the pair.

Today we’re focusing on the construction PMI data from the UK which came in positive figures.

The Next Few Days

For the time being, we can buy the pair around the current prices 143.90 and take profit around 146, then think about selling.

Luck or skill?

Just been watching that elderly Bimbo (Kay Burley) on Sky News doing an interview with Chesley Sullenberger in connection with the new Tom Hanks film about his epic crash landing on the Hudson River. After going through the usual ritualistic newsreader type of questions she ended with her usual girly gaze and said "do you believe in miracles?" Presumably she thought it was all just a piece of jolly good luck.

Chesley said (as best I can recall): No, I believe in skill, judgement, experience and training.

Some lessons for us traders there perhaps?

Currency exchange fee

Hey!

I have a question for you that keep on with daytrading where underlying products is in dollar and a currency change must be made on each trade to Dollar.

I do all my trades at CMC Markets and part of IG.
The I saw a few days ago that my profit was not really what I had counted on .. Called the CMC and IG and talked about it. They then revealed that they are taking the exchange rate + 0,03basepoints or what they said.

In other words, I get a lot worse exchange rate than the current price .. This is also when switched back!

This +0.03 basis points, they take as a fee for "services" do not understand how you can have a service fees when they are done automatically!

With that, I lose about 20SEK per trade .. may seem little but 20 * 250 days = 5000 SEK, cut 2 trades per day 5000 * 2 = 10 000 SEK per year!

My question to you is are they any online broker that does not have this "service charge"?

Charts in real time

I have just joined the forum and am looking to become a day trader. I am a complete novice in trading shares and will be looking through many of the newby articles to set me in the right direction.

My question relates to Charts. I have registered with Trading View to see charts for companies but notice they are not real time and out of sync by 15 mins. As a day trader, is there a mechanism where you can view real time charts so that you can respond to buying or selling of shares. Also they are not linked with De Giro the broker I have registered with.

Can anyone put me in the right direction? Is the realtime charts service chargeable? Any recommendations

Many thanks in advance.

Looking for EA or indicator that will open positions near to current price

Hi guys

I'm finding an annoying limitation with my broker - for some reason I can't place a Buy or Sell order within x pips of the current price. This is messing up some strategies I am testing that look for a momentum change then givce me an alert and wan't me to place a buy or sell order to enter on the retrace/correction.

But this limitation on where I can place market orders is causing a problem. I can manually place the trade anywhere i want but then that means me sitting waiting for the correct price to enter the trade after the alert.

I have the same problem with stop loss sometimes

I asked my broker about this problem but basically they said they could understand how it may mess with my strategy but are unable/unwilling to fix this. Personally I think it's just intended to make my trading life more difficult a job than it already is :rolleyes:

Anyway what I am thinking is, someone must have gotten around this problem already.

I've been looking for an EA, Indicator or something that opens the position when price hits the required price, instead of using a market order.

Something where I could manually place lines on the chart, one where I wanted to place an order but couldn't, and other lines where I want the stop loss and TP to go. Then it would open a position as required.

If it could also calculate the lot size dependent on the SL position and risk percentage that would be nice

Any recommendations - for MT4?

There must be something to do that I am sure. And if there is, then why did the broker put this limitation on me in the first place if I can easily get round it?

Cheers
Rich

Italy leaving the EU

On Sunday Italy votes to leave or remain in the EU.

If they vote to leave, will it impact the markets as much as Britain did?
Gold up, Euro down........

What are the polls saying ?

I can't find anything online and the average guy on the street knows nothing about it here.

Amazing Silver Market Trend

As I was writing about silver trading in a mobile app called BOOKCOINS. I made a small research on silver bar and coins investment and a few articles came up. One of the article content caught my attention, so I read it use the most layman term to put it in the content below for easy reference and better understanding.
Over the decades, metal investors has been praising about the stability of gold as an investment unit. Recently, silver has made a new statement and once again surprised us with a new world silver data.
According to 2016 World Silver Survey released on May 5th, physical silver Bar and Coin demand hit a new record in 2015. Physical Silver Bar & Coin demand a jump at 24% in 2015 versus the prior year reaching a record 292.3 million oz. “Private Bard & Rounds” was part of the reason for the higher record was it was added to the statistic.

Info from Silver Institute based on data from GFMS Team at Thomson Reuters
According to the demand change in World Silver Market Report on 2014 vs 2015, some of segments of the silver market (Industrial, Jewelry and silverware) were either grew only slightly or declined in the industrial sector. Silverware placed a distant second by increasing only 4%, Jewelry came in third at 1% and total industrial demand fell 4%. While Silver Bar and Coin demand surged by 24% in 2015.
It seems positive for the investor to focus more on the fundamental trend than short-term silver price movement simply because the trend will only get stronger as the financial system becomes weaker.
THE REASON TO BUY SILVER BARS & COINS!!!!
Prior to the first collapse of the U.S Housing and financial system in 2008, Silver Bar & Coins demand was only 8% of the global industrial consumption. It has become a higher trend and hit a record 50% in 2015.
